It was July in Reykjavik, Iceland and though the sun had been up since 4am, it was colder than California in January. It was early, a crisp harbor morning, along with the harbor docks were filled with excited passengers throughout orange jumpsuits preparing for our prime seas. We, just like many tourists within Iceland, had succumbed to the actual whale watching tour brochure, beckoned with images regarding fierce breaching orcas 2016 Cheap Stone Island Men’s Tee In Dark Navy as well as majestic humpbacks dancing. Touristy or not, it seemed like an experience we shouldn’t pass up.
An hour to the tour, we noticed a minke whale – a small, common ocean dweller. We ran to the border in great expectancy, because where there’s minke there’s orcas. But two hours passed and only one more minke sighting. By hour a few, the same two minke remained as on the horizon. The leader tried to lift our own spirits as he fawned over the beauty of the minke. However after hours shivering inside plastic jumpsuits, the minke lost it’s luster.
Barry and I found ourself wishing for some practiced pirate stories or even an Icelandic cover of “Copacabana”. Nevertheless alas, nothing help save for hours left on the sea with n’er a real whale in sight. So we would what any reputable tourists would do: We authored old fashioned whale jokes and shown our material for the crew (formally, about napkins, of course). Possibly they were as bored as we were, but one of the crew users actually handed us all a microphone.
Rob stood tall, required center stage – errr, dispatch – and posed the question: “Where do whales get a fun Friday nighttime ” Nothing. “The orchestra!” Crickets. But like the whale watching tour, we forged ahead. Humor about a porpoise’s purpose, how a humpbacks’ favorite band will be “The Killers”… One by one, our jokes ebbed and flowed, a number of getting a chuckle every now and then while others utterly tanked. When all was stated and done, and also we’d finally docked without having a single orca sighting to include, Jeff and I agreed – it’d already been a whale of a great time!
