This is the third in your series of Field Notes from our Toad Players – the folks who hit the road and distribute the Toad&Co ethos: Live nicely, do good and good company. Jeff and Jen live in Santa Barbara, California and are bonafide saturday and boutique stone island sunday warriors. Here are his or her Field Notes….
Kyoto is covered throughout sakura trees, or cherry bushes. In late March your cherry trees blossom and folks flock to see the actual pink and white flowers blow up across the city. It’s a problem in Japan. In fact, the national weather services tracks the motion of the “sakura front,” the wave that moves south-to-north every season along with heralds the blooming of the sakura and the coming of Spring throughout Japan.
We were within Kyoto when the sakura front struck. Kyoto is the historical capital of Japan, exactly where traditional Japanese way of life coexists perfectly alongside modernity. Shrines ended up full of worshipers in kimonos, business people bustled in downtown intersections and tourists inundated the monkey forest. Naturally, we had in order to sample everything Kyoto needed to offer.
We looked into the city by following the actual cherry blossoms from temple to temple. Some were crowded using tourists and local people marveling and taking selfies along with nature’s spectacle. And other temples were virtually unfilled. Tipped off with a local, we escaped up a hillside piste to sit in silence and also bathe in the pile light at one boutique stone island final temple.
For almost 1 hour we were the only individuals there – or so many of us thought. We wandered the grounds and were surprised to see a new smiling monk and his canine sitting quietly with the dragon fountain. There wasn’t much shared words between us, conserve for some laughter and in our eyes. Nevertheless we didn’t need to state much to fully comprehend each other. It was calm and silent – a full exchange. We stayed with the monk and his companion for an hour or so, and then departed just as softly as we’d arrived. Arigato. Sayonara. Appreciate the talks.
