We like alcohol – all kinds of beer: lagers, porters, stouts, IPAs, hefeweizens… and in many cases pumpkin ale. Or don’t let say especially pumpkin draught beer! Maybe it’s the cinnamon or maybe it’s the sweets rush, but nothing at all gets us from the spirit like a steamy pumpkin ale and a handful of chocolate covered pretzels. With a sophisticated palette and very complex criteria (Is it under $10 for a six-pack Does it have a cool tag ) we snagged a selection of pumpkin beers from the local food store and set up a tasting in the office. A number of ales squashed the competition while others left us a little woozy in the gourd. But don’t take our expression for it, celebrate Hallow’s eve (and the end regarding daylight savings!) using a six-pack of pumpkins. If you need a handful of suggestions, here’s what we sampled:
Pumpkin Ale, Saranac Brewery ($5, 32oz growler)
Fun fact about pumpkin ale: It was the first beer brewed in the US, brewed by the patriot named George California. So it’s only appropriate that one of America’s most ancient breweries is keeping the particular tradition alive along with well. If you can’t wait for holidays to eat a pumpkin pie, then allow the Ace Hard Pumpkin Cider keep you afloat. But be advised, this baby is sweet. Tasting like a liquified the apple company cider donut, we don’t recognize how pumpkiny this pumpkin cider is, but we aren’t complaining. Solid notes of nutmeg and champagne-like bubbles go with the apple cider base, and if you ingest enough you’ll probably flavor a few pumpkins too.
